The Ashe Center | Student Health and Wellness The One Skill That Will Improve Your Nutrition This Summer It's that time again, arguably the happiest time of the academic year: Summer break! And, for some, it's even time for graduation. Whether you are going to be interning at a fast-paced Fortune 500 company or just kicking back on the beach, one thing is for certain: There will be good food. Living in Los Angeles, we are spoiled with an abundance of choices. Rarely do we feel that sort of excitement as someone who has to travel far for anything less than common. Surrounded by great food at all times in this City of Angels, we can get almost anything our heart desires. But as a dietitian, I hope there's more to chasing good food in your summer break. I hope you will also take the time to learn the important skill of cooking. Learning to cook well is probably one of the best things you can do to improve your health and it’s probably easier than you think. Simply boiling some chopped tomatoes in water makes a nice tomato soup base or simply chopping all your veggies from the fridge makes a quick chopped salad in minutes. When you cook for yourself, you will usually eat better because of better control of ingredients. So this summer, beside visiting every mom-and-pop must-try places, what will you be serving at your place? And maybe, just maybe, with an overall sense of better health, you may gain a newfound sense of pride and accomplishment. Bon appetit and congratulations on a job well-done this academic year!
